  • Hi my name is Mary. I went to the Great Kid's Summit and really liked the program that you have and I learned all kinds of things that are going to help me out later in life when I go to apply for a job. Your program made me want to go out here and help kids that are on the urge of dropping out of school. Being able to go to the great kid's summit was a great experience for me. I would also like to say that I am interested in going to Kentucky University College after I graduate from high school.

Great Kids Summits. A success!
Over 180 high schools students and at least 30 adults from across Central Kentucky attended to Great Kids Summit in Frankfort to learn how to prepare for their futures and become ready-ready for school, ready for work, and ready for life!

Their energy and enthusiasm was apparent as they worked with local business leaders to learn about job preparedness and basic interview skills; learned the steps necessary to get into and help pay for college; and tackled one of the toughest issues Kentucky's youth face, the increasing drop-out rate of Kentucky's students.

The Great Kids Summit attendees were not alone as they navigated through halls of Kentucky State University to attend the day's workshops. Prominent leaders including:

  • Colmon Elridge, Executive Assistant to Governor Steve Beshear
  • Michael Denney, Director of the Family Resource and Youth Service Centers
  • Teresa James, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Community Based Services
  • Terry Brooks, Executive Director of Kentucky Youth Advocates
  • And Shaun Murphy, Branch Manager, Community Support for Students and Families at the Kentucky Department of Education
from across the state joined the students to observe the day and learn what young people had to say about the issues affecting Kentucky's youth.

They were impressed with what they heard. "This conference is amazing, the energy is so exciting! The kids have great input on how we need to work together to address the drop-out issue. The Governor and the First Lady will be hearing about this," said Elridge after observing students in the Ready for Life Workshop which focused on drop-out prevention.

"Our partnerships with GEAR UP Kentucky, KHEAA, KnowHow2GoKY.org, the Kentucky Child Now Youth Advisory Council, and business leaders have made these Summits incredibly successful. It's been a way to show how partners can work together to reach a common goal," said Mary Kate Poling, Executive Director of Kentucky Child Now.
