  • Hi my name is Mary. I went to the Great Kid's Summit and really liked the program that you have and I learned all kinds of things that are going to help me out later in life when I go to apply for a job. Your program made me want to go out here and help kids that are on the urge of dropping out of school. Being able to go to the great kid's summit was a great experience for me. I would also like to say that I am interested in going to Kentucky University College after I graduate from high school.

Parents and Youth Attend the Great Kids Summit - WKU

The issue is important: Ready for College, Ready for Work, and Ready for Life. Over 40 parents and 150 youth attended the Regional Great Kids Summit hosted by Western Kentucky University on Saturday, February 28th. Local community volunteers and business leaders gave presentations on interview techniques, how to dress for an interview, and how to build a resume. Representatives from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority also gave youth an opportunity to learn more about cost of college and the availability of financial aid.

Parents sat in on the presentations and in addition participated in a session which addressed their fears and concerns with having their kids continue with higher education. "It was an amazing session. Dr. Dean Kahler, VP of Academic Affairs for WKU relieved many of their concerns related to safety and accountability. Having the event on the campus also allowed youth and parents to get a feel of the campus life," said Mary Kate Poling, Executive Director of Kentucky Child Now. At the end of the day, a young lady stopped us and said, "Thank you! My mom and dad didn't want me to go to college but now I think they want me to go to WKU." This is exactly what we wanted the outcomes to be!
